Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring - Performance
Indeed, this diminutive four-banger is a joy to wring out, emitting a sporty growl that's a cross between a high-performance motorcycle and one of Honda's old-school VTEC fours. The Mazda mill doesn't offer that characteristic VTEC kick near redline, but it compensates with useful torque from about 3,500 rpm up. The shifter and clutch are among the best at any price: Unlike many manual-transmission tandems, this pair actually feels smoother and more precise when rushed. Sure, the MX-5 could use a little more power — we've often wondered why there hasn't been a Mazdaspeed version since 2005 — but anyone with an appreciation for sporting cars will get a kick out of running this ragtop through its closely spaced gears. Team Winmark : Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML320 Bluetec - Performance
Not surprisingly, the ML320 is hardly a driver's SUV in the real world. The diameter of the steering wheel is buslike, and that about sums up the steering feel, too. There's an unpleasant amount of play in the ML's tiller, and it feels like it's communicating with the tires via telegraph. Handling limits are perhaps a smidge above average for this segment, but there's too much jello in the suspension to encourage enthusiastic driving. Our test car's optional Airmatic electronically adjustable suspension seemed pointless, as cycling from Comfort to Sport merely dialed up the impact harshness while failing to rein in excess body roll.

Porsche 911 Carrera -
On the 911's track testing comment sheet, our hot-shoe road test editor had nothing but glowing superlatives to share about his time slicing through cones in the 3,200-pound Carrera. "Brilliant, perfect body control. Excellent steering weight and feedback. Predictable, intuitive." With a firm, trustworthy pedal, the brakes produced an impressive stop from 60 mph in 104 feet, which makes us wonder how much more stopping power the optional ,150 ceramic composite brakes would bring to the party.
